How Does A Vacuum Pump Actually Work?

We don’t really think about vacuum pumps and how important they are until we need them. For the average person, you only think about a vacuum pump when you are having trouble with your plumbing, especially the toilet, right?

Outside the usual residential plumbing problems, vacuum pumps are used in many things, mostly in construction.

They work by pumping or moving gas or liquid and in some cases solid, molecules out of one area by using pressure. They work on three principles – entrapment, momentum, and positive displacement.

1). Entrapment Pumps

Entrapment pumps use chemicals and apply them to the container or area that needs to be vacuumed. They also use cold temperatures to condense gases into a solid or absorbable state.

Once the molecules react to the chemicals, they are then removed by the entrapment pumps. Entrapment pumps are usually used alongside momentum transfer pumps and positive displacement pumps.

2). Momentum Transfer Pumps

Momentum pumps use high pressure to pump out the materials you want to vacuum. They use high-speed jets of fluids or gas depending on the need. There are two types of momentum transfer pumps:

Diffusion pump – blows out jets of oil
Turbomolecular pump – uses high-speed fans

3). Positive Displacement Pumps

Positive displacement pumps create low vacuums by expanding the volume of a container. They expand a cavity to allow clogged materials to flow out.

The expansion reduces the pressure allowing the molecules to flow out of the container.

4). Regenerative Pumps

Regenerative pumps are rotodynamic machines that utilise vortex behaviour of fluid or air. It uses the principle of energy transfer from a moving rotor to gas in the channel of the pump.

They are usually used to increase pressure in water networks in car wash installations. They are popular in the chemical industry and mechanical engineering.

5). Venturi Vacuum Pump

A venturi vacuum pump or aspirator works by using compressed air running through the pump. It has no moving parts. It reduces pressure from a “choke” or constricted area so fluid can flow through.

Venturi nozzles and tubes are used alongside the pump to elongate the exhaust section of the pipe.

The vacuum effect becomes stronger when the exhaust section of the pipe is extended longer. The longer the pipe the stronger the vacuum.

6). Steam Ejector

A steam ejector has no moving parts. It is a simple pumping device. This is a simple, reliable, and affordable vacuum device.

It uses fluid or gas as a source of force which is called steam jet ejector. Steam ejectors are most popular in the chemical industry.
